Spring is in full swing, and all but the very latest of our summer visitors are back on our shores.
This Friday we celebrate with an evening birdsong walkshop at Herstmonceux Castle (near Hailsham, East Sussex), listening for cuckoos, warblers and owls.
Our two previous walks at Herstmonceux have been very productive - a Firecrest showed off for us on both days, and sightings across the two walks included Grey Wagtail, Treecreeper, Blackcap, Nuthatch, House Martin and Great Spotted Woodpecker.
We also had the benefit of hearing from estate supervisors Guy and Hannah about the exciting steps the estate is taking to become more nature-friendly. We’ll hear more about that this Friday too.
It should be something of an adventure.
Hot on the heels, at 6am the next morning we will be Up With The Birds for an hour of live bird listening on Zoom - it’s free to all, and accessible whether you are in Sussex, Scotland or Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, if you haven’t caught up with Shriek of the Week lately, we’ve recently been listening to Whitethroat, Bullfinch, Redstart, Nightingale and Blackcap (as well as bit of Iberian Chiffchaff - the first one ever heard in Sussex 💥)
All 55 species and counting can be revisited for free via the A- Z. And if you’d like to hear fully narrated versions of most of these species (plus access to year-round monthly online meets), there’s a paid subscription option too.
Hope to see you soon!
